Green Gables

Green Gables

As the home of Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert where they welcomed Anne into their family, Green Gables has come to be one of the most famous homes in literature.  With Lucy Maud Montgomery’s fond description of this simple yet attractive house - clean, bright and sturdy - Green Gables has come to represent the idyllic farmhouse of many a reader’s dreams.

While Green Gables did in fact actually exist, L.M. Montgomery never lived in the house.  Using it as inspiration for her books, the real Green Gables was owned by an actual brother and sister, David Jr. and Margaret MacNeill, who were Montgomery’s distant relatives.   L.M. Montgomery lived nearby with her grandparents and would visit Green Gables often, exploring the woods and other areas around the farm, later describing some of these special spots in her books as “Lover’s Land” and “The Haunted Wood”. In 2005, Green Gables and the site of L.M. Montgomery’s Cavendish home were declared a National Historic Site of Canada.

Anne fans visiting Prince Edward Island can tour Green Gables and imagine the spirit of the little red-haired girl and her adventures within this fabled house of love.
