What better way to show your love for Anne of Green Gables than to dress up like her! Whether it’s for Halloween, a special party or just a day where you feel like pretending you live in Avonlea, here are a few ideas to make your very own Anne costume!
1. What’s the thing that most stands out about Anne? Red hair! If you’re not lucky enough to have your own red hair, you’ll need a long red wig or you could even use some red yarn. Tie it into two braids and wrap ribbons around the end.
2. Anne often wore a wide-brimmed straw hat. Borrow a hat from your mom, your grandmother or maybe you can find one at a thrift store. If you’re using yarn for your Anne hair, you could even attach the braids to the brim of that hat.
3. To look like Anne, you’ll need an old-fashioned looking dress. When Anne first arrived at Green Gables, she wore her orphanage clothes and very practical dresses. The dress should be very simple and modest and be at least knee-length. You might even have a dress at home that would work. Then see if you can find something that could act as a pinafore to wear over top – maybe an apron from your kitchen!
4. Anne was always outside exploring Avonlea so you’ll need sturdy, sensible shoes. Old fashioned looking lace up boots or even loafers will do just fine.
5. When Anne first arrived off the train in Prince Edward Island, she carried her few belongings in an old carpetbag. See if you can find a large, old looking bag around the house or at a secondhand store.
6. And the final touch? Freckles, of course! Using eyeliner or a makeup pencil, to draw a few small dots on either side of your nose for freckles.
To really be a convincing Anne of Green Gables, don’t forget to act like her. Cheerful, outgoing, positive, imaginative and curious, make sure you carry Anne’s spirit with you!
